The online application becomes available on the second Monday in September. The online application process is the preferred method of applying to our department.
The application deadline is December 21, 2011
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required of all applicants. The department does not require a subject test. If you want to be considered for a fellowship, you should take the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) by November. GRE scores older than five years will NOT be accepted. There are several department codes you could use (including Geophysics and Atmospheric Science), all of which would get the scores to us. The most commonly used code is the one for Geology, 0504. The institution (UC Berkeley) code for both the GRE and TOEFL is 4833.
International applicants from countries where English is not the official language are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Please see the Graduate Division website regarding required minimum scores. The department code to use is 71 (Geology).
Transcripts are required from every college or university you have ever attended. This includes transcripts of summer sessions attended even if only one course was taken; a summary of credit transferred from an institution previously attended that is recorded on the transcript issued by the university granting the degree is not sufficient. Transcripts not in English should be accompanied by translations from the university that issued them. Translations alone are not enough; we need both the translation and the original.
We will send emails in January to confirm that application packets are complete. Do not inquire before then as to whether or not your application is complete. A delay in receiving some materials such as letters of recommendation will not affect your application.
