Responsibilities- Implement EH&S programs/policies in one or more of the following fields: industrial hygiene, safety engineering, environmental health (sanitation), occupational safety (ergonomics safety and prevention), environmental protection, radiation safety, hazardous materials (hazardous materials and waste management), under general supervision
- Contribute to the development and recommend improvements of departmental EH&S programs, systems and procedures
- Assist campus EH&S professionals and act as a liaison in conducting basic sampling and/or monitoring procedures and conducting inspections of laboratories/facilities to ensure compliance with regulations, policies, and procedures; prepares reports -Coordinate unwanted hazardous materials pick-ups
- Provide training to Principal Investigators, graduate students, and lab managers in specific program areas - Perform emergency response
- Maintain and apply working knowledge of technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and the impact to the operating unit
- Maintain safety, vehicle, and research equipment. Maintain field equipment, organize field trips, ensures student safety and supports faculty teaching during trips, Identify and resolve potential hazards in the field. Create budgets for field research trips.
- Oversee $1.5M mineral museum collection ensuring secure storage, proper cataloging, and accessibility for research use. Recommend improvements to collection storage and preservation. In charge of equipment and other material storage, both in McCone Hall and external facilities (Marchant, Clark Kerr and EdwardsTrack)
- May supervise work study student
- Other projects as needed
- Solid, comprehensive working knowledge/understanding of EH&S policies and procedures including related state, federal and campus laws and regulations, and general understanding of the lab safety field
- Solid organizational skills to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple projects
- Good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively in a diverse environment
- Skill in the appropriate use of technology and relevant scientific equipment as required
Electron Microprobe Technician - Job ID #9813
Responsibilities- Maintain the Cameca SX-51 microprobe and other lab hardware, including repair, replacement and alignment of spectrometers, electron gun, crystal detectors and associate vacuum, high voltage, optical and mechanical subsystems
- Provide instruction in proper operational techniques and fundamental knowledge to enable students to operate the probe without supervision
- Maintain records for a recharge system and order supplies/materials for operation
- Upgrade and/or modify obsolete or outdated hardware including electronics, automation, spectrometer and detector components
- Implement new matrix corrections as they are developed
- Schedule usage by internal and external customers, minimizing conflict
- Learn about other departments on campus, their current and potential needs for electron microprobe analysis, and about how these extra-departmental users can avail themselves of the facility within the context of an inter-departmental recharge system
- Make contact with academic and commercial entities outside UCB that may wish to use the facility
- Other duties as needed
- Bachelor's degree (or higher) in geosciences or material sciences
- Knowledge of the physical processes that are involved in electron microprobe analysis
- Production and focusing of an electron beam, penetration of electrons into the mineral, production of X-rays, absorption of X-rays in the sample and absorption corrections, detection of X-rays, interference corrections and the role of mineral standards
- Fundamental knowledge of the physics and chemistry of electron beam sample interaction, of electronics and of optical and mechanical instrumentation is essential.
- Excellent computer skills are critical
- Familiarity with the needs of researchers doing federally sponsored research and ideally would have first-hand experience with graduate-level research, and the technical aspects of proposal preparation for NSF
