The 2017 harvest moon greeted sky watchers around the Bay Area Thursday night.
Unlike the typical full moon, the harvest moon is the full moon closest to the autumn equinox.
However, unlike “normal” years, when the harvest moon tends to rise in the month of September, the 2017 harvest moon rose in October-the first time that has happened since 2009.
This was due in part to the fact that the September full moon rose on September 6, which was 16 days before the equinox. Where as the October full moon rose on October 5, 13 days before the equinox winning it the title of harvest moon for 2017.
