Departmental Overview
Research and education in the UC Berkeley Earth and Planetary Science Department is driven by a fundamental curiosity about the past, present and future of the earth and other planets, including: the origins of earthquakes, volcanic activity, changes in the earth's climate and the impacts of global changes on society.  Faculty, students and researchers in the department engage across disciplinary lines to understand atmospheres, oceans, terrestrial surfaces, deep interiors, the biosphere and the coupling between them.
Maintenance, Repair and Operation of Sample Preparation Facilities  – This includes rock saws and rock polishing equipment, preparation of thin sections. This role will also be responsible for training students, postdocs and faculty in the use of these facilities and providing knowledge of hazards involved with sample preparation and application of safely measures to prevent them.

Maintenance and Operation of EPS Work Shop  – This facility is essential to maintain many research laboratories in EPS. This role is responsible for repairing and maintaining laboratories and instrumentation.

Maintenance of Optical Microscopes  – There are about 30 petrographic microscopes used in courses. The SRA III will maintain and annually undergo a systematic cleaning and functionality test.

Management of Advanced Instrumentation – Includes maintenance, operation and training of users of X-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope. These instruments are also used for teaching and research. It requires knowledge of relevant data analysis and use of software. They also provide funding and are also used by external scientists.

Management of Rock and Mineral Collections: McCone, Clark Kerr and Regatta – These collections are essential for courses such as EPS50, 100a, 100b, and 118. They consist of minerals and rocks, including thin sections and are used in lab sections. They are located in McCone and need to be maintained. The large collection is at Regatta and contains research specimens dating back to the beginning of the Department. It contains valuable samples associated with a large number of scientific publications. They are catalogued and this catalog needs to be maintained and upgraded. Some collections are still at Clark Kerr and will need to be transferred to Regatta. Maintenance of collections requires a basic background in geological sciences.

Safety Regulations  – The role is responsible for ensuring that all EPS laboratories comply with radiation and lab safety regulations and representing EPS during campus EH&S and state inspections.

Recharge Operations and Webpage  – The SRA III must maintain and further develop a webpage for available EPS user facilities to attract users, schedule user access and clearly describe the facilities, including costs. These facilities contribute to the salary of the SRA III and to lab maintenance. Maintain records of recharge clients, addresses, and payment information, such as charstrings.  Coordinate with department financial analyst to properly invoice and collect payments from recharge clients in a timely manner. Submit purchasing requests in Bearbuy and work with various vendors to make needed purchases.

Supervision and Training  – The SRA III will supervise and train students as necessary (including work-study students) particularly for performing sample preparation, XRD and SEM analyses, and assist in setting up geology labs that use collections, microscopes and thin sections.
Required Qualifications
• Demonstrated ability to work independently or as part of a team, organize work assignments, establish priorities, develop appropriate recommendations and solutions, and ensure completion of multiple projects to meet all deadlines.
• Ability to maintain oversight as well as accuracy and careful attention to planning and detail.
• Effective interpersonal, and customer service interactions. 
• Ability to develop and maintain cooperative, effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff, including individuals from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Familiarity with basic software resources, both for data analysis, preparation of documents, and communication.

Bachelor’s or equivalent experience/training in geological sciences or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master's degree in geological sciences or a related field.
• Advanced knowledge of work shop tools and lab equipment.
