KAUST awarded a large research grant to investigate “green cement” and “geopolymers” by Professors Paulo Monteiro (CEE), David Attwood (EECS and ALS) and Rudy Wenk ( 3 2008)
A research proposal to investigate “green cement” by Professors Paulo Monteiro (Civil and Environmental Engineering), David Attwood (EECS and ALS) and Rudy Wenk was awarded by KAUST in the highly competitive Global Research Partnership Investigator competition. Conventional cement is one of the worst contributors of greenhouse gases and the goal is to develop new materials, including geopolymers, that are more environment-friendly. Much of the work will rely on synchrotron X-ray and neutron scattering, and electron microscopy. Rudy never imagined that his mineralogical studies may become relevant for climate change. The picture shows Paulo and Rudy collecting samples in the field.
