The Department of Earth and Planetary Science offers one undergraduate major leading to a B.A. degree in Earth and Planetary Science with six tracks:
We strongly encourage you to come see the Student Affairs Officer as early as possible. Students are accepted into the major with a C average or better. There are a number of scholarships and research opportunities as well as other benefits available to declared majors. You have to take the lower division required courses for a letter-grade, unless the course is offered only on a P/NP basis, and you need to earn a C- or higher in each course. The department will allow one D grade in a lower division course as long as you maintain at least a C average in the major. If you're interested, visit Catherine Pauling, the Student Affairs Officer, at 305 McCone Hall or (510) 643-4068, or e-mail . She will give you the appropriate forms to declare a major and direct you to an Undergraduate Advisor. ![]() Honors Program Earth and Planetary Science students with an overall grade point average of 3.3 in the University, including 3.3 in the major, may apply for admission to the honors program. Application should be made through the student's major advisor no later than the end of the student's junior year. Candidates for graduation with honors in EPS are required to take three units of EPS H195 and work on a senior thesis with a faculty member in the Department. Minors The minor is flexible enough to allow you to explore a general interest, or to focus on a particular area. You can work out the details when you see an undergraduate major advisor. Lower Division: EPS 50 or equivalent Upper Division: Five upper division courses chosen from the major list with prior approval of the major advisor At least three of the five upper division courses must be completed at Berkeley. No more than one of the five required courses for your minor may be included in your major program. All courses must be taken for a letter grade and a minimum 2.0 GPA is required in the upper division courses applied to the minor. The "Petition for Confirmation of Minor Program Completion" form is available at the L & S Advising Office. Once you have completed EPS 50 and the five upper division courses, bring a copy of the Petition to 305 McCone to have it signed. - Return to top - |
