EPS 39A Spring 2008
EPS 39A will give an opportunity to learn more about the earth through direct field observation. The main part is a 4-day fieldtrip which will expose students to the great variety of geological issues ranging from evolution of California, rock-forming processes (sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic), earthquakes, environmental issues, mining and water management. The fieldtrip will be preceded by a few introductory lectures to prepare students for topics that will be discussed in the field. A fee is required to cover cost of transportation and food. We will camp and hike.
There will be two sections guided by different instructors:
April 10-13, 2008. Section 1

Geology of the Northern California Coast Range. San Andreas Fault, American Plate, Pacific Plate, Volcanism, Ecology.
April 24-27, 2008. Section 2:
Professor Rudy Wenk (wenk@berkeley.edu)
Geologic cross section through California, Sierra foothills (mining, caverns), Sierra Nevada plutonism, erosion, glaciation, Yosemite (this section requires strenuous hiking)

Monday January 28, 4-5 p.m.: Organizational meeting.
Wednesday January 30, 4-5 p.m.: Building blocks of the earth.
Monday February 4, 4-5 p.m.: Geology of California.
Wednesday February 6, 4-5 p.m.: Watching movie on plate tectonics.
Monday April 7, 4-5 p.m.: Organizational meeting for fieldtrip of section 1.
Monday April 21, 4-5 p.m: Organizational meeting for fieldtrip of section 2.
