The Department of Earth & Planetary Science at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary lecturers and lecturers in lieu of GSI’s to teach Earth and Planetary Science courses for Fall, Spring and Summer should an opening arise. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies depending on the needs of the department. Positions may range from 4% to 100%.

Instructors of Record duties include teaching , holding office hours , assigning grades, advising students , preparing course materials (e.g. syllabus ), developing exams and/or quizzes , supervising GSIs , scheduling fieldtrips, participating in fieldtrips, maintaining a course budget and maintaining a course website. There are no research or Lecturer’s in lieu of GSI’s duties entail leading discussion sections, fieldtrips, labs or instruction of prescribed course content, under the active direction and supervision of the instructor of record who has final responsibility for the course’s entire instruction. The appointee is not solely responsible for instructional content of the course, selection of assignments, planning of exams, or for determination of course grades, but may assist in these tasks in collaboration with the instructor of record who has final authority. Other course support duties may include, but are not limited to, holding office hours, grading, and participation in development of quizzes.
Basic qualifications: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent international degree) by the time of application.
Additional qualifications: A Master's degree (or equivalent international degree) by start of appointment.
Preferred qualifications: A Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) in Earth Sciences or Geology is preferred. Experience teaching college level courses. Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
Salary: To be commensurate with experience; minimum full-time annual rate is $56,318. This position is in a represented bargaining unit. Appointments may be part-time and may require applicant to work weekends and nights.
