It is with great pleasure that we share the news that Jill Banfield was awarded the “Van Leeuwenhoek Medal”, an award presented every 10-12 years to commemorate the the contributions of Antonie van Leeuwenhoek to science and society.
The award recognizes her pioneering research and groundbreaking technologies in metagenomics and community proteomics to study bacteria, archaea, and phages — leading to a more complete tree of life with new branches. The award also recognizes the broad ranges of societal impact that come from understanding the functions of microbial communities in a wide variety of environments.
