Prof. Lung S Chan received his bachelor’s degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and his master’s and PhD in geology and geophysics from the University of California, Berkeley. He taught geology at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire for 10 years before joining The University of Hong Kong about 30 years ago, including 8 years as the head of two community colleges affiliated with the university. His research interests include the geology and tectonic history of Hong Kong and South China, as well as applied geophysics. He was the recipient of HKU’s first University Distinguished Teaching Award in 2010. In the realm of learning and curriculum development, he served on HKU’s Steering Committee for Curricular Reform, developed a learning scheme that applied the problem-based learning approach to field settings, and conducted many PBL training workshops for both university and secondary school teachers. Additionally, he has organized and led numerous student field trips over the years to study the geology of various places, including Montana, California, mainland China, Taiwan, Cyprus, Tibet, Australia, Iceland, Greenland, and Antarctica. After resigning in 2022 from his position with HKU, he returned to pursue geological research at UC Berkeley. He also co-taught parts of the courses Applied Geophysics and Geodynamics.
